چکیده

Sexual reproduction is an ancient feature of life on earth, and the familiar X and Y chromosomes in humans and other model species have led to the impression that sex determination mechanisms are old and conserved. In fact, males and females are determined by diverse mechanisms that evolve rapidly in many taxa. Yet this diversity in primary sex-determining signals is coupled with conserved molecular pathways that trigger male or female development. Conflicting selection on different parts of the genome and on the two sexes may drive many of these transitions, but few systems with rapid turnover of sex determination mechanisms have been rigorously studied. Here we survey our current understanding of how and why sex determination evolves in animals and plants and identify important gaps in our knowledge that present exciting research opportunities to characterize the evolutionary forces and molecular pathways underlying the evolution of sex determination.

The Knowing Doing Gap_Jeffrey Pfeffer and Robert I Sutton.PDF

Why do so much education and training, management consulting, and business research and so many books and articles produce so little change in what managers and organizations actually do? The authors call this the knowing-doing problem – the challenge of turning knowledge about how to enhance organizational performance into actions consistent with that knowledge. Improving organizational perfor...

Fetal sex determination via Nested-PCR method using Amylogenin gene

Background: Detection of fetal sex is valuable for parents. The aim of this study was detection of fetal sex in suspect cases recessive related to sex disease in first trimester of pregnancy. Material and method: After collecting C.V samples and separating from mother’s samples, their DNAs have been extracted, then doing PCR, finally the sex of them detected. Also, after increase in sensitivit...

A review of artificial gynogenesis in the Caspian Sea sturgeons

In sturgeon, female-sex rearing is economical and gynogenesis induction is one of the ways to achieve it. In gynogenesis, an egg develops without the genetic influence of the male, or on the other words, it is a method of reproduction in which the offspring are formed exclusively from the genetic information of the mother. In this technique, the sperm used must be genetically inactivated. Rays ...

Socially repugnant or the standard of care: Is there a distinction between sex-selective and ability-selective abortion?

Why do most medical authorities accept, endorse, and even encourage prenatal genetic screening while opposing sex-selective abortion? The juxtaposition of these 2 practices raises questions of how they compare and whether there is a credible, ethical basis for endorsing one while condemning the other. We hope to encourage this conversation without raising broader questions about the morality of...

The adaptive significance of temperature-dependent sex determination: experimental tests with a short-lived lizard.

Why is the sex of many reptiles determined by the temperatures that these animals experience during embryogenesis, rather than by their genes? The Charnov-Bull model suggests that temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) can enhance maternal fitness relative to genotypic sex determination (GSD) if offspring traits affect fitness differently for sons versus daughters and nest temperatures e...
